Concern at "Loss" of mental Health services

Torbay Liberal Democrats have "hit out" at the closure of a much valued mental health service in Torquay town centre. Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb visited the Waverley site in St Lukes Road Torquay to discuss the closure of this service with Liberal Democrat ward councillor Mandy Darling and the Liberal Democrat team for Torbay on Friday 29 April.

She said, "Torquay has lost the mental health services that were once on its doorstep. In the last few weeks the community mental health team HQ, at Waverley in St Luke's Road, has closed. The building is now boarded up. Those with mental health problems are now having to travel to Paignton or Torbay Hospital to attend appointments."

Torquay Liberal Democrat campaigner Nicholas Pentney said, “In the last 12 months the Cool House in Morgan Avenue, a drop-in centre for those with mental health difficulties, has also shut. All this on top of deep Torbay Council cuts to supporting people programmes has left many people disadvantaged and struggling to cope."
Liberal Democrat M.P. Norman Lamb, former Health Minister with responsibility for mental health, said, “We are very concerned about the loss of this facility which seemed to me to be located near to where people live and the Castle Circus health centre and with good public transport links.  Now it will be harder for Torquay residents to access this service.  I am really concerned that this has occurred without effective consultation with the local community.“
