Paignton’s Liberal Democrat Councillors: Christine Carter (Roundham with Hyde), Ian Doggett and Adrian Sanders (both Clifton with Maidenway) have delivered the first batch of signatures on a petition calling on the Mayor to Keep Oldway for The Public.
They believe a community owned trust, unlike the Council, would be able to fundraise, attract charitable and lottery funding as well as accept volunteer support.
Cllr Christine Carter said: “We have delivered the first 1,777 signatures to the town hall with people still signing via the Torbay Liberal Democrats website. It is the big issue in Paignton where people feel let down by the Council who promised a luxury private hotel was the answer to Oldway’s future.
Cllr Ian Doggett said: "Work should have started in January 2013 on the site. The petition calls on the Mayor to set up a Trust to take over the estate. Seed-corn money to start a Trust is available from the proceeds of the sale of the Fernham nursing home and community wood on the Oldway estate.
Cllr Adrian Sanders added: "The uncertainty over Oldway has gone on for far too long and it is affecting the lives of people who live in the area. It is time for Plan B and involving the public in what they would like to see happen to the Mansion and its grounds.”
