Keep Oldway for the People

Many people are concerned that the work to convert the mansion into a private luxury hotel should have begun in January 2013. The costs of maintaining the grounds and the buildings are falling on local council taxpayers or being taken from a fund set up following the sale of the Fernham nursing home and Fernham woods to McCarthy & Stone. Meanwhile new costs have fallen on taxpayers for accommodating services previously housed at Oldway, while rent-paying tenants have been evicted.

Petition to the Mayor:

I, the undersigned call upon Torbay Council to Keep Oldway for the Public by setting up a Community Trust and inviting applications for Trust members to take over control of the Oldway Estate.

If gifted to the community then it is not the councils to sell – its beautiful and should be treasured – (as should the Pavilion in Torquay !)

Without Oldway, Paignton will be just a memory of the 60’s bucket and spade holiday destination. Yet, in those days Paignton lured in holidaymakers from well north of Bristol because of its special public mansion – Oldway. And, for those holidaymakers (who were to prepared to walk 400m inland from Preston) they were enchanted and captured by visionary elegance and grounds planted by plantsmen from afar. The Davidia involucrata tree for instance, flowering in May, is still today testament to that visionary, and, must be one of the finest examples of that specie anywhere in the British Isles. Oh, our British summers appear to be back. I remember those 70’s six grass tennis courts were the best kept short of Wimbledon. Our summers are finally back, lets hope Oldway shall as well.

Such a beautiful location going to waste…love the gardens, love the tennis courts, love the streams, ducks and squirrels….. loved the exquisite building hosting Weddings, Receptions and School Proms loved the relaxing cafe, loved the grass tennis courts, loved the putting greens….. what happened? Or maybe that should read…what didn’t happen?

I really think more could be made of Oldway, keeping open to the general public while at the same time generating enough income to be maintained. I really feel there needs to be a dedicated visitor centre for Agatha Christie, this building is of her era and she visited the ball room for dances, this could be transformed into a beautiful restaurant in keeping of the time with the perfect setting for also dining outside with the tennis courts as a back drop, and reinstate it as a venue for weddings, perhaps with the offer of vintage car rides. We really could make Oldway a huge attraction benefitting the locals and local businesses and giving the Agatha Christie fans a venue to remember and recommend to others. It’s shocking that such a beautiful building is left to ruin when it should be the star of the show.

It is a pity this is a party-led petition – but despite not being a LD – I want Oldway, once of the jewels in the bay crown, to once again to belong to the people of Paignton as intended. This is part of our heritage and should not fall into the hands of questionable developers!

I believe that it is important for the local economy that Oldway Mansion is functioning, whether as a hotel spa or local attraction. If it is left to depreciate where will the money come from to restore it to its former glory? As a major tourist attraction for the area, I believe that the council needs to be accountable for the future of the Oldway estate, and with this in mind the whole process of the sale should be more transparent.

The longer we delay action on refurbishment of Oldway, the closer we get to a point where it would have to be demolished. The current developers will not start work in an appropriate timeline.
