On Friday 29th April, Torbay Liberal Democrats held their annual dinner at The Paignton Club; an excellent venue for such an occasion with magnificent sea views. The event was very well attended by party members, activists, supporters and councillors and the guest speaker was Rt. Hon. Norman Lamb, MP.
In the last Parliament, Norman Lamb raised the profile of mental healthcare in Government and led the drive to improve and provide a joined-up health and social care system, a system we already have established here in Torbay.
During his speech, Norman Lamb highlighted the differences in priorities which are becoming increasingly apparent between the Coalition Government and the current right wing Tory Government.
In Government, The Liberal Democrats anchored the Coalition in the centre ground, balancing the need to reduce the deficit with the need to protect the weakest in society and safeguard our vital services. The Tories are now intent on eroding the pupil premium, rolling back on green policies and abandoning child refugees. Norman Lamb presented the Liberal Democrat members with a vision of a caring, liberal Britain, which “gives power to people against often a bureaucratic state that doesn’t listen to you”
At the end of the night, members were left feeling motivated and fired up to campaign vigorously to abolish the Mayoral system in the local referendum on May 5th; win the by-election in Tormohun, also on May 5th and the support the Remain Campaign in EU Referendum on June 23rd.
Thank you to Sue Biles for arranging the event and thank you to Richard Raybould for the video of Norman Lamb's speech:-
