Decision Day for King George V Memorial Playing Fields Watcombe
2 February 5.30pm Riviera International Centre Torquay
You can help put right an 80 year old wrong. The King George V Memorial Playing Fields were never registered as such. We have delivered over five thousand leaflets in three weeks and collected over 1300 paper and online signatures demanding that the Council transfers ownership of the fields to an organisation called Fields in Trust, which was established to protect sites like these in the interest of public recreation. The Conservatives have been holding meetings with Torquay Golf Club to extend their facilities over the memorial playing fields.
The petition is now closed, but you can now do two things to help win the day on 2nd February at the Full Council meeting:
1. Lobby your ward Councillor.
There are 37 votes on Torbay Council and to win we need 19 votes in favour of our motion. We are confident that all Liberal Democrats, 3 Independents and three Conservatives will vote for the motion to place the KGV site with Fields in Trust. This means we need five more Conservative councillors to back our campaign. You can lobby your ward councillor to support the motion to protect King George V Memorial Playing Fields. Details can be found at-
2. Come to the meeting.
The decision over the King George V playing fields is set to take place at the Full Council meeting this Thursday 2 February at 5.30 pm at the Riviera Centre. It will be an early item on the agenda, so do come along to back our campaign. A good turnout may sway a couple of votes and it may well prove to be as tight as that.
The leader of the Liberal Democrats on Torbay Council, Cllr Steve Darling, said: “People use the fields all the time or have fond memories of using them in years gone by. We have right on our side and it feels like we have a good chance of winning the day for our local communities.”
St Marychurch campaigner David Ward, who is presenting the petition at the Full Council meeting, said: “Many people were under the misapprehension that these fields were protected for the people of Torquay. We have the chance on Thursday to put right this 80 year old wrong and register them as memorial fields for King George the Fifth”
