The Conservative Elected Mayor for Torbay published his final budget proposals last night at the Full Council meeting. Objections need to be lodged with the Council by 4pm on Monday the 8th February.
Liberal Democrat Group Leader Steve Darling said "We are consulting over how best to protect vital services the Conservative/UKIP administration propose to cut. Our concerns include:
• The deletion of the Social Fund from the baseline budget that will eventually end crisis support for those in desperate need in our community.
• The proposal to close Connections offices in Torquay and Brixham without any clear alternative service in the towns. It will impact heavily on people in most need of Council services and support and will result in a second class service for residents in two of our three towns.
• It is unclear from these proposals as to whether the Council have got the balance right between caring for those in need of social care in their homes, and those in a residential setting.
• Cutting £331,000 from highways maintenance when there's a £19 Million backlog of work in the bay.
Finally we have grave concerns that Councillors are being expected to back this budget with out a clear financial strategy over the next few years.“
